HiperFire EDT & EDT2 Trigger ReviewHiperFire has jumped into the market with a completely new AR15/AR10 trigger design which shooters are raving about and is sweeping across the 3Gun circuit. For many competitors, the HiperTouch 24C triggers are the only trigger they would even consider using. As an example, both HiperFire and I sponsor Nate Staskiewicz who is now on track to be one of the top 3Gun shooters in the world, is the top Junior Champion in the US, and competed on the US Skeet team in Italy. Indeed HiperFire has done exceptionally well with their HiperTouch 24 line of triggers. HiperFire also offers plenty to the individual who just wants to to upgrade the stock Mil-Spec trigger on their defensive, LEO, or military carbine to better feeling trigger with greatly reduced pull weight. HiperTouch’s founder, Terry Bender, had an idea to overcome many of the shortcomings of “match” triggers. Terry is not just some guy filing down sears and swapping out low power springs in his garage, he is a mechanical engineering consultant. The approach to the HiperTouch design was new from the ground up.
HIPERFIRE EDT FAMILY OF TRIGGERS
The EDT design does not feature the additional spring cam design of the other HiperTouch triggers, but retains all the features of the higher tier trigger designs. The EDT and EDT2 triggers both deliver HiperFire’s improved sear alignment for a flat crisp trigger feel, mass centered hammer design for a faster lock times and higher hammer fall energy than stock all while offering the user a better trigger feel with a 4.5+lb or 5.5+lb trigger weight let off.
There are also a few other features such as a open disconnector channel which allows the disconnector to self-clean debris out of an area of the trigger which usually gets gunked up. The rear of the trigger is also upswept to prevent less potential interference should a primer or other debris become lodged into the trigger assembly. Due to the upswept rear of the trigger I will note that in testing both of these triggers that you do need to be careful with aftermarket non-mil-spec selectors. The Seekins Precision 90/45 degree safety selector as an example can be installed to deliver either a 90 degree or 45 degree selector throw, however it cannot be used in the 90 degree configuration with the HiperFire EDT series and has to be configured for a 45 degree offset throw. The EDT and EDT2 line are primarily focused on people who want to comply with LEO, National Match and Military requirements for a trigger upgrade which does not deliver less than a 4.5lb trigger pull. These folks are likely not going to be bolting on a bunch of billet parts so, I see this as a very limited compatibility issue with a very small number of aftermarket selector switches.
Trigger weights on both the EDT and EDT2 can be swapped between the two included 4.5+lb and 5.5+lb springs which are color coded for easy identification. Of note, usually HiperFire triggers do not require you to remove the safety selector which requires the removal of the grip which does make installation pretty quick assuming you can get the stock trigger out. Once the trigger is assembled the trigger pull is pretty amazing for an $85 (EDT) or $95 (EDT2) trigger. I tested the EDT2 on a Stag Arms AR15 which had a very heavy 9+lb trigger according to my Timney Trigger Gauge. After installation of the lighter spring I was just over 4.5lbs and a very delightful 4.5lb trigger pull it was. I also tested the heavier spring which netted just under 6lbs, however the trigger pull and break still had that great HiperFire feel.Because both the EDT and EDT2 triggers are rated to deliver in excess of 4.5lb trigger pulls over extended use, they are approved for NRA Match Service Rifle, LEO, and military replacement trigger options. Generally these folks are stuck with “tuning up” a Mil-Spec trigger which can lead to potentially some reliability and safety issues, however the sub-$100 EDTs can be dropped right in.
The original EDT trigger delivered AR15 shooters an inexpensive trigger option which delivered greatly enhanced trigger feel and drastically reduced trigger pull, greatly reduced lock time, while maintaining Mil-Spec hammer fall energy. The EDT2 was designed for the shooters who need higher hammer fall energy than Mil-Spec such as in .308 rifles or on 7.62x39 or 5.45x39 AR builds. The EDT2 is essentially the same EDT trigger with more hammer mass to deliver a heavier strike. The trade off is a little slower lock time than the original bobbed hammer EDT design, however the EDT2 still has a much faster lock time than stock Mil-Spec triggers. For most applications I would stock with the EDT, however for those that need a even heavier hammer fall energy, the EDT2 is worth a look.
Now the coolest part of these HiperFire EDT and EDT2 triggers is that they are both well under $100. The EDT line up is an exceptionally great deal and delivers a trigger feel which is best in class compared to anything I have tested under $100.
FINAL THOUGHTS
The EDT line of trigger may get lost in the very large shadows of the top tier HiperTouch 24 line of triggers, however it shouldn’t. The HiperFire EDT line of trigger delivers an incredible value and performance for the person who does not need to performance or higher price of the HiperFire 24 line. For well under $100 it's a deal, however I would say that this is also the best trigger you will find for under $150. Considering it delivers all this while being NRA Match, LEO and Military approved upgrade, it seems like one of those parts everyone should consider.
