Hornady Shackle Box and TriPoint Lock Box Review

Along with producing arguably some of the finest production ammo, reloading components, and reloaders on the planet, Hornady is expanding to new product areas to include parts cleaners and even some great safe and lock box products. Last year Hornady introduced their TriPoint Lock boxes which deliver simple and extremely secure firearm protection considering their size, weight, and cost.

Hornady offers two Lock Box options; the Shackle Box and the TriPoint Lock Box. The two designs are essentially the same size and shape, but the Shackle Box features a hard 1⁄8" laser cut, steel shackle that adjusts via two internal pins to accommodate objects up to 3½" in diameter. The TriPoint Lock Box features a 1500lb security cable which can be looped in, around, and under a variety of immobile objects.

Instead of the typical single point locking mechanism on most economy lock boxes that can be literally pried open with a butter knife. In this case, the Hornady Lock Boxes deliver higher than usual security via a full length tamper resistant hinge, and three locking points (signifying the tri-point branding). The result of this design is an extremely secure secure box for the size and cost around $40-$45.

The size is big enough to hold 1-2 firearms depending on size and provides good access to the firearms inside once opened. The lock boxes are not spring loaded speed accessible safes, however they are more than adequate for securing your home defense firearm.

Both Hornady Shackle Box and TriPoint Lock Boxes exceed the ASTM International performance standards for youth resistant firearms containers and are made of heavy 16 gauge steel.

What I like about these lock boxes are traveling with them. Though I usually stay in hotels with in-room safes, many times I do not and this is where the Hornady Shackle Box and TriPoint Lock Boxes are very handy. You can use either of these TSA approved boxes to check you unloaded handgun when you fly. They provide the required TSA security and when you get to the hotel, you can also use them as your in-room or in-car safe to secure your firearm or some of your valuables while your are traveling. Depending on your local laws, it may provide enough security to fulfill required on-property firearm storage for church, school, and certain organization that restrict on-property firearms. Pretty neat concept.

For under $50, I think everyone should have one of these who owns a firearm simply because it delivers a lot of flexibility even if you just need to have one in your truck or under your seat to secure your firearm before walking into church.
